Ann - Hope in Houston

When I pondered the meaning of the word HOPE, my favorite animal shelter came to mind. The Houston SPCA is truely a safe haven for lost and abandoned animals. It is a "no kill" shelter and the volunteers are  kind and loving to the animals.  It is run entirely on donations and receives no government funding. It is very clean and efficient too! It has been a part of Houston since 1924.

The photos below are of very "hopeful" residents of the Houston SPCA.

They call this little brindle boxer "Rocky". He was hit by a car and the shelter performed emergency surgery on his leg to save his life. He may have only 3 legs now, but he is amazingly skillful at walking and play.

Hi , my name is CHANCE and I am hoping for a new home very soon. Ain't I cute!!

This rottweiler was huge but very affectionate towards me...He was begging me to play with him.

I must say that even though this is my favorite shelter and it provides a huge service to our animal friends, it is very difficult for me to visit. I just drop in, offer a little love and money, and then say "GOODBYE". I always feel a bit sad and even guilty for not doing more! I am so thankful for all the volunteers and donors who make such a difference in the lives of these precious beings!!!

This was a challenging assignment for me.  I thought about what hope looks like to me, and set out to shoot some images that spoke to me of hope, without including photos of smiling babies or pretty flowers.  Here is what I came up with, with explanations to follow each image.

This is the Methodist Church in Half Moon Bay.  It is the oldest functioning church in the county.  Although I am not religious, there is something about this church that makes me happy every time I see it.  The building is simply beautiful.  This is the old chapel, that has been maintained & lovingly cared for for over 120 years.

I took this photo of my boxer Riley at our mountain house with a plastic camera.  There was 3 feet of snow in the yard, and he was standing on the deck, with a piece of kindling by his side, with that look that said "please."

Winter trees by Hayfork Creek.  It had been snowing and very gray, when the sun peeked out through the clouds.

Driving across the Oakland Bay Bridge on the way back home, I noticed how the rain softened the hard structure of the bridge, making it dreamlike and very beautiful.
